give me a BREAK

here's why i think that most cooking blogs out there are full of crap and owned by pretentious people who think they are awesome:

i have been looking for quick, easy, and cheap recipes for the wedding. i'm trying to compile a bunch for [info]rubicat for when she gets back from SC. i've been poking around online as well as checking our books from the library. anyway, this morning i happened upon a website called Domestic Goddess as i was poking around, i found a recipe for "s'mores".

i'm sure all of you have made s'mores before. they are quick, easy, and delicious. p and i LOVE s'mores. of course, s'mores aren't a good choice for a wedding, but i was interested in the recipe anyway.

here's the s'mores recipe

first of all, who has the TIME to make their own 1) marshmallows and 2) graham crackers? the whole point of the invention of s'mores was that it was supposed to be something super easy to make with friends and family when you're out in the wilderness. when we live in an age where you can purchase the three main ingredients needed for cheap, who in their right mind would buy the 17 ingredients needed in this recipe? i was shocked that they didn't have directions and a map to where you can pick your own goddamn cocoa beans for the chocolate!

so, yeah, it irks me that people think that recipes like this, as well as some of the chefs on the food network are so much better than quick and easy recipes and shows like rachael ray's "30 minute meals" because they take more time to prepare. recipes like the one i posted i'm SURE taste exactly the same as one i make in my back yard (if i had one). the only difference is that the person making their own marshmallows is making them just to say "i made my own marshmallows".

sorry, but food snobs irk me.

well, it's like, there's a difference between getting pizza from bertucci's vs dominos, you know? there's an obvious difference in quality, and generally fresh or homemade stuff is going to taste better, and be healthier. i mean, read the ingredients on a bag of marshmellows, and then read the ingredients she listed on her site. there's a huge difference.

that said, i am a decent food snob.

well, i can understand the bertuccis/dominos difference (dominos makes me gag), but s'mores? they aren't supposed to be good for you. it just seems like way too much work for a dessert that shouldn't even be made in a kitchen.

other recipes i can understand, but this one just boggles my mind.

i think there's bad for you, like sugar and stuff, and then there's bad for you, like prepared-food-full-of-preservatives type bad, you know?

it might seem excessive, but it's prolly worth it.

smores are going to be the next stupid hip trendy thing, i swear. i've seen some "smores hibatchis" in a couple arbitrary catalogues...maybe they will be the next fondue

i know what you mean. i guess what irritates me is that this is a treat that's supposed to be slapped together and messy. not something you're going to order in an upscale restaurant.

oh yeah! those s'mores hibatchi's are all the rage. i got an email from amazon.com saying we should add it to our registry. so i did. it looks fun :)
